This week the US Senate will vote on the Federal Marriage Amendment, or S.J. RES 30. This resolution is to propose an amendment to the US Constitution the text of which is short and simple:
`Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman. Neither this Constitution, nor the constitution of any State, shall be construed to require that marriage or the legal incidents thereof be conferred upon any union other than the union of a man and a woman.'
Amazingly enough, there are those in the senate who oppose this resolution, who oppose defining the basic foundation of the family in the Constitution. Here in Florida our Senators Bob Graham (D) and Bill Nelson (D) have gone on record as saying this is a civil matter and on that basis have indicated they will vote to oppose S.J. RES 30.
I take opposition with our honorable Senators. This is not a civil issue, nor is it a states issue. Neither is it a “gay rights” issue. The essence of the Federal Marriage Amendment is defining the foundational basis of our society. Just as our constitution sets forth the basis of our government, this issue will support and preserve the family as the foundational pillar of our society.
Our founding fathers knew this but in the climate of their times saw no need to define this into the Constitution. No doubt they would be aghast to find it necessary today. In the Declaration of Independence they recognized the “Laws of Nature and of Nature's God.” Look anywhere in the world and you will see these “Laws of Nature” defining the coupling of families as having it’s basis in male and female. The propagation and nurturing of young is carried out by male and female.
Child psychologists and family counselors agree in vast numbers that the best environment to raise and nurture children is where there is both a loving father and a loving mother. Well balanced children who integrate into society and have a healthy understanding of themselves and their peers originate in families where both father and mother participate in their development.
That we have in recent years eroded that model does not diminish the truth of the principle. Certainly there can be argument of the failure of the family in American society. Sadly, even when Bill Cosby noted such, he was shouted down at Howard University last May. We have seen a failure of fathering, of parental responsibility, of children born then neglected by both fathers and mothers.
Argument can be made as to the reasons for those failings. Whether it be a rise of parental self-interest and self-centeredness, irresponsible men who procreate then abandon. Mothers who by desire or necessity leave the home for the call of the workplace. Whether it has been exacerbated by a government bent on the destruction of the family through taxation, family “planning”, government indoctrination in the schools, these can all be debated. But the resultant failings of the family do not nullify the vital role of both a father and a mother in the rearing of children. If anything, those failings validate the need for the proper and healthy roles of fathers and mothers.
Every society in the world recognizes the necessity of the nuclear family with the marriage of a man and a woman at its very basis. Only in the US have we, in political correctness, degraded this natural principle to the extent that we must now define in constitutional form what the rest of the world knows implicitly. Without this defining basis, our society will continue to degrade and implode, eventually contributing to the destruction of our very way of life.
It is essential to the permanence of our society, and by extension our form of government, that we as a nation make every effort to preserve and defend the nuclear family which has at it’s basis the marriage of one man and one woman.
I urge you to educate yourself on this issue, quickly. The vote is coming up in the Senate this week, possibly as soon as Tuesday. Contact your senators, sign petitions, get involved.
